Runaway Slaves

This is Ellen Craft. She is mixed blooded because her father was white and her mother was black. Her mother was sold to a white family when she was young, and she was sold to not long after. Ellen worked with another slave named William, and got married to him. They worked in Macon, Georgia and worked for a wealthy white family. The Christmas of 1848 they decided to

escape. Ellen at age 22 would dress herself as a white man. And
William would pose as her slave. She had to be a man because no women would travel with only a male slave. She would say she needed medical treatment up north, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ( the "free states".) They took a risk because if they wrer caught they would be thrown in jail. Ellen and William went on a marvelous journey on their way to freedom.

Nat Turner Nat Turner was born on October 2, 1800 in Virginia
He was born to slavery to a plantation owner Benjamin Turner. In Aug. 1831 he led a slave revolt and became famous for it.

He was very religious. He led a rampage on Aug. 31st,
and was captured, tried, and hung.

Harriet Tubman was a brave woman, she use to be a slave, but she made the decision to run away. She was brave because after she had run away she went back to help the people in her old town and helped other slaves run away. She was important in the underground railroad. She was important because she helped many many many other slaves escape. Lots of the escaped slaves helped other slaves get to their freedom.
