Underground Railroad



The Underground Railroad is a story of the struggle for slaves in the long and scary trip to freedom. They had to take the right route, had to be careful who they talked to and had to go to the right place so they did not get caught and thrown back into the plantation that they worked at before.

The Underground Railroad is not a running train. It is a way for slaves to get to the North so they can be free. If you are wondering how they new which way was North all they had to do was follow the North star!

On the Underground Railroad slaves stopped at people's houses to stay over night. The run away salves knew that any house that had a quilt with certain symbols on it was a safe house. This is a drawn quilt that has what some of the signs for a safe house was:
