The Underground Railroad

Harriet Tubman was pretty much the founder of the Underground Railroad

Another picture of Harriet Tubman

These are some of the many, many routes of which slaves escaped and followed

Picture of Josiah Henson who was born into slavery. Fled to Ontario, Canada, where he became a conductor.

This is a picture of Mary Ellen Pleasant who resolved to fight slavery once she escaped servitude. Later becoming an Underground Railroad conductor.

The Underground Railroad did not pull together the whole nation, but a lot of it. The U.R. gave hope to millions of slaves all over, in which was a big part of the nation. Conductors were people who would help slaves on the U.R. along the way. Hiding them, transporting them, and feeding them.

Though many slaves were too frightened to go, they still knew that whites and blacks were out there helping slaves free and wanting change. Sadly, only around 35,000 slaves out of about 3,590,000 were freed through 1830 to 1860.

"I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other."
