Battle of Gettysburg

The battle of Gettysburg was in Pennsylvania from July 1-3 1863.

The battle resulted in a Union victory.
Gettysburg battle was known as the civil war's 'turning point'.








Aside from the deaths of soldiers, 5,000 horses were killed in the three day long battle.











Gettysburg National Cemetery

The cemetery was dedicated on November 19th 1863. The Gettysburg National Cemetery was dedicated to the deaths of the Union soldiers who had died in the battle of Gettysburg.





Seven years later the Confederate soldiers were given a special graveyard.





It was one of the bloodiest battles in American History.
For the Union,
3,155 were killed.
14,531 wounded
5,369 captured/missing

For the Confederacy,
4,708 were killed
12,693 wounded
5,830 captured/missing


Gettysburg Address

After the Gettysburg battle, president Abraham Lincoln made a short speech called the Gettysburg Address. It was a two minute speech, but also one of the most popular speeches in history.
He delivered it on November 19 1863, four months after the battle of Gettysburg.



General George G. Meade





This is General George Gordan Meade (above). He was the leader for the Union.
He is best known for the victory against General Robert E. Lee at the battle of Gettysburg in 1863.




He was born on Dec. 31 1815.
He was a U.S. army officer and also fought in the Mexican American War and the Seminole War.


Robert E. Lee


This is General Robert Edward Lee (above). He was the Confederate leader. He was the commander of Northern Virginia.

He was born in January 19 1807. Also, he was a U.S. soldier for 32 years, as well as serving in the Mexican-American war.

Why did Lee's army lose the battle after it had defeated the Army of the Potomac in so many previous battles?
