In many cases the amputations were outside (see above) where they would catch infections much faster. There were also many diseases out on the battle field because of the men left out to die. It was a waste of time helping people with chest or head wounds so they let them die.
During the building of the Panama canal thousands of people died from malaria. They were very harsh conditions, it was very hot. Teddy Roosevelt (see above) was still very proud of his multi million dollar investment.
The only good thing that came out of all the death and disease is that health care got much better. They found multiple vaccines for various diseases (see below) and trained there surgeons much better.
