The good jobs back in the 1850's where blacksmiths, shoemakers, furniture makers, printer, teachers, and ministers. Men were usually the ones that worked at these kinds of jobs. Women and children usually worked in the factory. They were usually hired to work there because they worked for lower wages.
Usually working conditions were not all that good. Many people died of thing's that could have been prevented. Cotton workers often had barrel's of cotton fall on them. People were harmed or killed by falling into equipment that was not protected. People would die from infection because they did not have good heath care or medical insurance.
Workers usually lived and worked in one place. They paid rent and they paid for food. So more than half of their pay check went to rent and food. So the little money that was left went to their family, or any other thing.
Woman usually worked in factories that were sometime very crowded with all the woman that worked there. The environment in these factories were bad. Woman's hands often had cuts on them from all the hand on work they did.
In the early 1900's woman started to protest for there fair rights as workers.
The National Women's Trade Union League (WTUL) provided important assistance to the strikers.
