The civil war had millions of deaths. The deaths were mostly from disease. Most of the military camps (view left) had one small water source that they used as a sewer and drank out of. They got many diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever. There health care was terrible at this time if you got sick you would most likely die. Out on the battle field there were these things called mini balls that were shot out of muskets. When they hit the soldiers they would not die but get a terrible infection and then die. They would have to amputate there limbs (see below) to stop the infection from killing them. And often the doctors would not wash there saws before amputations so if you didn't die from the infection you probably die from the pain of the amputation.
